Sorry, Guys. I don’t mean to intentionally exlude anyone here, but I gotta be honest: this blog will probably be way too “female” to qualify as “fella friendly.” (Then again, it may be either too heavy or too light in the “lady” department to satisfy some members of the estrogen brigade.)
When considering what to focus on for HEvencense, I decided that an Abe Lincoln paraphrase was a good rule of thumb: “You can’t please all the people all of the time.” So I won’t try. Instead, I’m working on a blog that reflects my perspective on topics of interest to me: faith, family, friends, and femininity. I also decided NOT to include yet another tired rehash of that over-worked icon, the “Proverbs 31″ woman. Don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with that woman. I just think women are More than one chapter in a Book of Wisdom. So if you’re looking for that kind of blog, look somewhere else.
You see, I wonder if we women sell ourselves short by trying to define ourselves wholly and solely within the straight-jacketed strictures of that one text–or its companion passage: Genesis 2.
Don’t think so? Google “Christian woman” or “biblical womanhood” and see what pops up. It’s usually something with: Homemaking, Frugal Living, Sewing & Quilting, Housekeeping, Child Rearing, Wife-ing, Mothering, Pregnancy, Homeschooling, Gardening, Canning, Ministry, etc.
Not that there’s anything wrong with any of those and I don’t want to slight anyone here (or touch off WWIII). I certainly wouldn’t argue the high calling of mothering, the biblical design for an intact, two-parent home based on biblical principles, or the various merits of wife-ing, ministry involvement or raising godly children. But since when is a “Christian woman” defined solely by a To Do list? Why is Christian femininity so often strait-jacketed into what we Do instead of who we Are at our inner core? What about the HEART of a woman?
The devotionals, essays, meandering, occasional rants and musings of HEvencense can’t and won’t provide a complete answer to those questions. But hopefully they’ll offer a sweet fragrance of femininity mingled with an aroma from above to form HEvencense.
See, Guys? Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
